The Halifax Port Authority (HPA) is committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for its employees and contractors. Health and safety is HPA’s first priority and will not be compromised for the sake of business interests or operational expediency.
HPA shall meet or exceed the requirements of all applicable legislation and regulations with respect to matters of occupational health and safety in the workplace and will require the same of any contractor it engages.
HPA believes that occupational injuries and illness are preventable and shall ensure its employees are properly equipped and fully trained in all aspects of health and safety related to their duties. HPA further believes that health and safety in the workplace is a shared responsibility and workers are expected to exercise and promote good safety practices.
Contractors and Service Providers
Contractors and service providers performing work on Halifax Port Authority (HPA) managed lands, facilities, and premises are required to follow all applicable Federal and/or Provincial Legislation and Regulations. Prior to work commencing, contractors and service providers must submit through their project manager a completed HPA Contractor Safety Checklist that will be reviewed by the HPA Safety and Compliance team. There may be other documentation required such as environment and security documentation. Please ask your project manager.
On or before the first day of work, contractors and service providers will be given a site safety orientation from their project manager or site contact. This will be delivered in person and will cover important information such as known hazards, location of emergency equipment, what to do in the event of emergency, concurrent activities in the area, and any other relevant items. You will be given a paper or electronic copy of this orientation for your records. If circumstances require it, this orientation may be delivered by other means (phone, email).
For the duration of the task, project or contract companies performing work will be required to provide copies of safety related documents such as:
- hazard identification and risk assessment for tasks performed
- recognized certifications and licences
- toolbox meeting minutes
- equipment inspections record such as vehicle trip inspections, ladder inspections, and elevating equipment.
Failure to provide these documents could result in work stoppage under the authority of HPA Safety and Compliance.
