About the Terminal Gate Metrics

The Terminal Gate Metrics module provides current visibility on fluidity of our truck gates through providing current and historic information on two key metrics:

  • Gate Wait Time
  • Truck Service Time

The data is made publicly available in an effort to shorten wait times and, in doing so, reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.

How is truck traffic measured?

For this project we are using MacPass readers. The MacPass is the electronic tolling system used by Halifax Harbour Bridges. Most local vehicles have a MacPass transponder that can be detected by our readers as they pass various check points:

  1. Upstream
  2. Terminal Inbound Gate
  3. Terminal Outbound Gate

The Gate Wait Time represents the mean value for trucks that pass from the Upstream location to the Terminal Inbound Gate in the last 30 minutes.

The Truck Turn Time represents the mean value for trucks that pass from the Terminal Inbound Gate location to the Terminal Outbound Gate in the last 30 minutes.

The data is a representative sample of trucks entering and exiting our marine container terminals. We will not capture all truck movements. No personal information is being gathered as part of this project.

In the reader gauge we use three colours:

  1. Green (0 to 30 minutes)
  2. Yellow (31-45 minutes)
  3. Red (45+ minutes)

Times when gates are closed are not measured.
