Port of Halifax to Collaborate on Short-Sea Shipping to Midwest
Halifax, NS - July 16, 2009 - The Port of Halifax is collaborating
with an Ohio port which aims to become a gateway to the Midwest. The Halifax Port Authority and Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority signed a Memorandum of Understanding on July 15 to discuss the development of short-sea shipping opportunities via the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway.
"The Midwest has long been an important inland market for the Port of Halifax and we are looking at all angles to diversify the options open to shippers interested in reaching major US markets whether by short-sea shipping or rail," says George Malec, Vice President, Business Development and Operations, Halifax Port Authority.
A 13-person delegation of port, civic and union leaders visited the Port of Halifax on July 14 and 15.
