The Asian market has grown in importance at the Port of Halifax as a trade that is expanding at roughly twice the rate of the traditional transatlantic trade. Along with India and China, the Port of Halifax enjoys advantageous all water connections to all continents that have important emerging markets and is particularly well positioned to service Vietnam, Malaysia, Brazil, Russia, and northern Africa.
The Port of Halifax, is known for being the first gateway to the markets of North America's heartland. Halifax is one full day closer to South East Asia and Europe than any other east coast port.
Via the Suez Canal, Halifax is 1,500 nautical miles closer to India than any ports on North America's west coast. Also known for its deep, wide, ice-free harbour, Halifax is one of the few eastern seaboard ports able to accommodate post-Panamax ships. The Port of Halifax is the first inbound North American port for trade with India via the Suez Canal.
In June 2006, the Port of Halifax signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Jeena & Company which is India's oldest freight forwarding company, established in 1900. Today, a century later, they are known all across the globe for their professional services. The Halifax Port Authority’s first office abroad was in India in association with the Jeena & Company offices throughout India. In January 2009, the Port of Halifax also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chennai Port Trust. The Port of Chennai is situated on the South-East coast of India and is strategically located and well connected to service many of the world’s major markets.
