The Halifax Port Authority is a local port authority with a mandate to develop market and manage its assets in order to foster and promote trade and transportation and serves as a catalyst for the local, regional and national economies. The Authority manages six categories of properties comprising of 258 acres of land – container terminals, grain elevator, cargo-handling facilities at Ocean Terminals and Richmond Terminals, non-cargo facilities, the Seaport (supporting cruise), and Halifax Harbour.

 

 

At this time the Halifax Port Authority requires a

 

 

                                                            PROJECT ENGINEER

 

 

Reporting directly to the Director of Infrastructure, the Project Engineer is responsible for planning, design, preparation of tender documents and supervision of construction with regard to the Port’s Capital and Major Maintenance Projects contracted out.

This position requires a comprehensive background in engineering design (civil) in marine/highway/bridge/municipal and structures, both steel, concrete and timber; good writing and communication skills, particularly technical writing (specifications, scope of works, etc.) a basic familiarity and understanding of construction contract law; well versed in occupational health and safety matters; and an understanding of environmental mitigation measures in construction projects.  This individual should have knowledge of AutoCAD and general computer skills as well as GIS (Geographical Information System) experience.

 

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with a degree in Civil Engineering with a minimum of (10) years experience. Experience on project estimating including: construction costs for upgrades of existing or new facilities; consultant’s fees for investigation and/or design work; and costs for material testing.  Experience in contractual matters including managing projects either alone or through field staff (inspectors, etc.).  Hands on experience with several different construction methods or techniques such as rock drilling, socketing, dredging, driving steel sheet piles, single pipe piles or H-pipes, concrete/grout placement, asphalt placement and exposure to plant engineering and construction.  Experience in assessing the condition of infrastructure; performing inspections, investigations, etc.; scheduling for all types of work (both contractors and consultants) and managing project budgets; and a proven ability to deliver construction projects in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environments.  Must demonstrate excellent communication, team/relationship building, decision making, results oriented, leadership and adaptability skills and be an innovative and strategic thinker.
